About Us

His Excellency Alhaji (Dr) Lam Adesina

Also affectionately known as "Ore mekunnu" (Friend of the common people)

(20/01/1939- 11/11/2012)

Lam was a much loved husband and father to six children, living in Ibadan, Nigeria. He was an educated, wise and generous man, and a former Governor of Oyo State (1999-2003). His leadership extended into both education and politics throughout his life

Lam was born on 20 January 1939. His mother died when he was still very young but he worked hard at school from a young age. At  college he was a progressive and brilliant student , drawing attention from the media as a young man.  Lam started his career as a passionate 'champion' of education, working as a teacher for many years to earn a living for himself, his wife and his young family.

Later Lam became involved in politics where his strong democratic values became a driving force in Oyo State. Lam was imprisoned twice during the 1990s for his political beliefs, having committed no crime.  He endured threats to his life but "neither bombs, nor chains, nor bullets shall stop the daring democrat" (Olalere Fagbola 1999). In 1999 he was elected Governor of Oyo State and served his fellow compatriots for 4 years, achieving progressive change. After 2003 Lam continued to be seen as a leader of democratic values in Nigeria, prioritising his principles and strong moral compass ahead of his own safety and personal life.

During his extraordinary life he reached out and helped his fellow compatriots in many ways. He is sadly missed by all those who knew him, but his legacy now lives on through the work of the Ayo Lam Care Foundation

"The Incorruptible Democrat" (by Olalere Fagbola)

In1999 a photo-biography of Alhaji Lam Adesina was published in Nigeria  (ISBN number 978-31929-0-7)

Some of the most striking quotes from this book are featured below;

  • "All of us are each an Adesina in a way, as we afford to open new ways, new vistas for humanity"
  • "He learns to no purpose, he who is unable to teach" (Lam realised the wisdom in this saying by Sir Samuel Jackson at a young age)
  • " All heroic minds often face stiff opposition from mediocre minds" (Olalere Fagbola)
  • "The struggle is my life"  (Alhaji Lam Adesina)

Professor Olaoluwa Akinyele (1999)- "I recommend this book for those who seek to be leaders of people in the next millenium. His value systems need to be amplified to youngsters who only seek material things and have wrong values. A good moral foundation can be built by young people through reading the life and times of Alhaji Lam Adesina and his antecedents. I encourage both young and old to read and study this significant biography, more than that everyone should strive to make his principled approach part of their lifestyles."
